Sagres is a magnificent place, full of charm, where history and legend intertwine continually, where the charming presence of Henry the Navigator still lingers within the walls of its fortress. The fort offers visitors one of the most exciting sights of Sagres. The current appearance dates from the restoration in 1793 and it impresses for the imposing walls and the 'Rosa dos Ventos' (wind rose, an early form of the compass rose) by no less than 43 meters in diameter, which legend is said to had been built for the prince Henrique and used by navigators to find the direction of the wind itself. The more modern history, always in competition with the most intriguing folk tales, however, seems to be aimed at cataloging the wind rose, as the basis of an enormous sundial.
